Audra Macdonald tony awards

Broadway star Audra McDonald made history Sunday night by winning her sixth Tony Award, as well as becoming the first person to ever win in four different performance categories.

McDonald, 43, took home the statue for best lead actress in a play for her portrayal of a broken-down Billie Holiday in “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill.”

Audra Macdonald broadway play

The play tells the "personal tales of difficult choices, bad breaks, worse men, and some of the most glorious songs ever written," according to the show's website, which calls McDonald's performance, "the role she was born to play."

After McDonald's big win, she tearfully accepted her award to a standing ovation and paid tribute to the legacy of female African-American singers. She also thanked her late parents for ignoring their doctor's advice to medicate their overactive daughter and instead directing her toward the theater.

McDonald has previously won awards for her roles in "Carousel,""Master Class,""Rag Time,""A Raisin In The Sun," and "Porgy and Bess."

Her historic win tops Angela Lansbury and Julie Harris's previous records of five acting Tonys each.

Matthew McConaughey Explains Why Movie Stars Are Heading To TV

matthew mcconaughey critics choice 2014

When Matthew McConaughey accepted the award for Best Actor in a Drama Series at the Critics' Choice Awards for his role in "True Dectective," he addressed a question he — and probably many other big actors — get asked all the time: "Why did you make the move from film to TV?"

McConaughey said it was an easy answer.

"Quality. Not only quality that specifically came out of ‘True Detective’ which was quality of the highest, but I’m talking about quality of television today," said McConaughey. "Television is raising the bar on the character-driven drama series. It just is."

"What other medium do you get to have that as actors and writers — that tasty act one which is all that character development that we love?" he continued. "You don’t get that anywhere else. Where else do you get to see that introduction to character so patiently unfold on the screen? ... Plus, you’ve got the weekly episodes. You’ve got the Monday-morning watercooler talk. You’ve got the Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, whatever those days are, anticipation of seeing the next episode and I can’t wait to see it. That’s what television has given us as artists and that’s also what television has given us as audiences. I’d say thank you to that."

McConaughey joins a long list of actors who have boarded a television series in the past few years whether in a miniseries or a network series. Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton were a part of History's record-breaking 2012 miniseries, "Hatfields & McCoys," Ashton Kutcher boarded CBS' "Two and a Half Men," and Claire Danes leads Showtime's "Homeland."

This summer, Halle Berry will appear as an astronaut on CBS' "Extant."

Chris Rock Skewers Donald Sterling, Jay Z, Dr. Dre In BET Awards Monologue

Chris Rock

Chris Rock opened Sunday’s BET Awards with an 8-minute monologue mocking everyone from Donald Sterling to Jay Z.

After calling the BET Awards "The Black World Cup," Rock said, "Tonight you're going to see something you never see  "black artists getting credit for something they created."

Rock then recapped some of the year's biggest entertainment stories:

1. Solange v. Jay Z:

“Solange hit the right rapper. Jay's a businessman now, he can't just go punching girls in the face — he's got a meeting with Nabisco in the morning. She hit 'Blueprint 3' Jay Z, because if she hit 'Reasonable Doubt' Jay Z, that elevator would have been filled with lipstick, blood, and weave."

2. De. Dre's $3 billion deal to sell Beats Electronics to Apple:

"Dr. Dre got $3 billion. The man who made 'The Chronic' made $3 billion! The man who started NWA got $3 billion! It looks like the west coast won, sorry Puff."

3. Hit TV show "Scandal":

“A lot of people think ‘Scandal’ is a hit because of Kerry Washington — and she's great in it — but the real reason that ‘Scandal's’ a hit is because every Thursday at 10 o'clock there's a white president. Like for one hour, everything is back to normal.”

4. Oprah in the Oscar-nominated movie "The Butler":

"Oprah Winfrey should have gotten an Oscar for that role because she had to act like she was poor. There was one scene where she was stirring a pot of food for her man. You know they had to get specialists in to help her with that  had to show her what a spatula was  she thought it was a money flipper!"

5. Donald Sterling:

“Now let me get this straight: an 83-year-old white man doesn't like black people. Is that news? First of all, a black man couldn't look him in the eye until he was 45. The first black person he even met he got for Christmas.

... Don't make me defend Donald Sterling, [but] what exactly did he say? ‘I don't want my woman around black basketball players.’ Me neither! Are you kidding me? Who the hell wants their woman around black basketball players?”

The 17 Biggest Snubs And Surprises From The Emmy Nominations

$

the americans keri russellThe nominations for the 66th Primetime Emmys were announced Thursday morning and not everyone is happy.

Netflix stunned again, receiving more than double of last year's nominations pushing out comedies like "Brooklyn Nine Nine" and "Parks and Recreation" and dramas including "The Good Wife" and "Homeland" from receiving nods.

While BBC's "Sherlock" and HBO's "True Detective" received their fair share of praise, a lot of favorites went unrecognized.

Snub: Sure, Julianna Margulies received her nod, but "The Good Wife" gets shut out of the drama category despite a huge twist this past season.

Surprise: Netflix was nominated for an outstanding 31 Emmys between "House of Cards,""Orange is the New Black," and Ricky Gervais' "Derrick." Last year, the streaming service picked up 14 noms.

Snub: Despite announcing the nominees, Mindy Kaling didn't receive a nod herself.

A Ridiculous Rule Is Allowing 'True Detective' To Go Up Against 'Breaking Bad' At The Emmys

$
0
0

true detective matthew mcconaughey woody harrelson

HBO's hit series "True Detective" will be going head-to-head with AMC's "Breaking Bad" at the Emmys this year.

Among its 12 nominations, the series received nods for both Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series and Outstanding Drama Series.

While that sounds fair, both shows were incredibly talked about in the past year receiving high praise from critics and fans alike, some say it makes little sense for the HBO series to be sitting alongside "Breaking Bad" during its final season.

Back in March, HBO announced "True Detective" would compete as a drama series. The news was met with surprise since the show fits the Emmys' definition of a miniseries

A miniseries is based on a single theme or story line, which is resolved within the piece. In a single awards year all of the parts must be presented under the same title and have continuity of production supervision.

A miniseries consists of two or more episodes with a total running time of at least four
broadcast hours (at least 150 program minutes).

It also fits the definition of a drama series:

Comedy and drama series are defined as programs with multiple episodes (minimum of six), where the majority of the running time of at least six of the total eligible episodes are primarily comedic for comedy series entries, or primarily dramatic for dramatic series entries, in which the ongoing theme, storyline and main characters are presented under the same title and have continuity of production supervision.

Since day one, it's been known "True Detective" would have a different cast and storyline every season

It's an unusual television format that FX's "American Horror Story" adopted when it first aired in 2011. It's also one that the network's new show "Fargo," nominated for 18 Emmys, also shares.

american horror story

However, both of those shows are dueling it out in the TV movie/miniseries category.

What gives? Is HBO's drama getting special treatment?

Not exactly.

Vulture pointed out a closer read of the Emmy's rules shows exactly why "True Detective" never would have been put into the miniseries category unless producers went out of their way to receive permission to run in either category.

A limited-run series with a "created by" credit CANNOT enter as a miniseries
unless the producer for the limited run series applies for and receives entitlement to dual
qualification, i.e. qualification in more than one category, because of an affirmative
determination by the Awards Committee that the limited run series has elements of both
drama series and miniseries categories.

The jarring line there is the fact that any miniseries that conveniently has a "created by" credit can't be labeled a miniseries unless a petition is submitted.

It's a rule that has allowed "American Horror Story" to be nominated as a drama a miniseries after it lost to "Homeland" at the 2012 Golden Globes in the drama category

The move was met with a lot of backlash from critics who claimed the show thought it had a better chance of winning in the Outstanding TV movie or miniseries category. But honestly it seems kind of weird for a show with a revolving cast and storyline to receive the same treatment as longer dramas.

Vulture reports the only reason "Fargo" didn't have the same issue this year is because the FX series cleverly made the decision to phrase its credit as "created for television by" instead of "created by."bob odenkirk fargo

It's a very unclear and murky way for the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences to deal with the nomination categories for shows.

It's not just "True Detective" that was placed into a category that may not correctly define it. "Orange is the New Black" is being labeled as a comedy so it doesn't go up against fellow Netflix series "House of Cards." Showtime's "Shameless" is also in the category after being considered a drama for three years now that award-winning "30 Rock" is over.

What's worse is that we could very likely see "True Detective" in the miniseries category next year if there isn't as much buzz about season 2 and it doesn't want to go toe to toe with AMC's "Mad Men."

The "created by" loophole, if you will call it this, allows HBO to take advantage of a brilliant opportunity to try and take down TV favorite "Breaking Bad" during its final Emmy run.

Think of the headlines if "True Detective" shut out "Breaking Bad" from the biggest awards of the night.

Yes, "True Detective" certainly has the legs to possibly upset the AMC show, but the bigger win for HBO may be knowing it beat out a show it passed on so many years ago all because an exec thought the series' premise was too boring during a pitch meeting.

Fans Go Ballistic On Twitter After Discovering The Teen Choice Awards Are Rigged

People are furious after discovering that Fox's Teen Choice awards are rigged.

Fans picked up on the fine print in Sunday's telecast, which read:

Winners for the Teen Choice Awards are determined using the votes cast on Teenchoiceawards.com. Votes are tabulated electronically and winners are determined based on the nominees in each category with the highest number of eligible votes. Teenasaurus Rox reserves the right to choose the winner from the top four vote getters. The Olay Fresh Effects Breakout Star Award and Ultimate Choice Award were both chosen by Teenasaurus Rox.

Teen Choice Awards

The rules are also printed on the Teen Choice Awards website, but the kid-friendly awards show has always given off the impression that fan votes determine the winners. In reality, winners are chosen and notified ahead of time to ensure celebrities like the Kardashians attend the show.

After angry Vine stars tweeted their frustration, #TeensDontHaveAChoiceAwards became the top Twitter trending topic during the broadcast.

Vine celebrity Cameron Dallas, who has 3.11 million Twitter followers, exposed the show by tweeting (and then deleting):cameron dallas teen choice awards tweet

Dallas, who won “Choice Viner,” was upset he lost “Choice Web Star: Male” to YouTube personality Tyler Oakley.

Fellow Vine sensation Matthew Espinosa tweeted to his nearly 2 million followers: “Basically they picked the people almost 6 days before voting was done and used all of us for promotion.” But he was quick to add, "Idc about all the drama tonight. Why don't we tell each other why we're happy! #ImHappyBecause you all make me smile every day."

Fans, meanwhile, were outraged:

Bryan Cranston And Aaron Paul Reunite For 6-Minutes Of Comedy Gold To Promote The Emmys

It’s been about a year since the final eight episodes of “Breaking Bad” aired on AMC.

If you miss the duo of Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul on television, this should make your day.

The two reunited for a six-minute video to promote next week’s Primetime Emmy Awards. However, instead of reprising their beloved roles of Walter White and Jesse Pinkman, they star in a parody of History’s “Pawn Stars” series.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus from “Veep” joins in, too.

It’s comedy genius.

Randy comes quick to her defense. After all, Paul has two supporting actor Emmys of his own for the AMC drama.

Why This Year's Emmys Will Air On A Monday Night For The First Time In Nearly 40 Years

$

0

aaron paul bryan cranston

For the first time in 38 years, the Emmys will occur on Monday night.

The last time the ceremony was held on Monday was during the 28th Primetime Emmy Awards in May 1976.

Typically, the event is held on a Sunday evening in late August or September, but we'll be watching the 66th annual awards ceremony on a different night for a few reasons.

Ever since 2006 when NBC has aired the Emmys they have taken place in August.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, this is because of NBC's deal to air Sunday Night Football, a big rating's winner for the network. When asked about the shift to Monday, Deadline reports NBC attributed the move to avoid any conflict with the NFL preseason

A quick look at television scheduling shows NBC probably made the decision to move to Monday night to avoid going head-to-head with another big awards' show.

MTV's Video Music Awards just so happen to be airing Sunday, August 24.

This isn't out of the ordinary as the VMAs usually air some time at the end of August or early September on a Sunday.

This year's event is expected to is expected to have Taylor Swift debut her new song "Shake It Off" on stage. Beyoncé is also set to perform and will receive the Video Vanguard Award, MTV's lifetime achievement award.

Instead of getting two awards shows competing against each other (and HBO's series finale of "True Blood") for similar demographics in the ratings, we'll be getting two big awards shows back-to-back.

The three-hour Primetime Emmys will air August 25 from 8-11 p.m.

When the Emmys air Monday, HBO's hit series "True Detective" will go head-to-head with AMC's "Breaking Bad" in one of the closest races of the night.

Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande may have opened the MTV Video Music Awards with a showstopper; however, no one closes out an awards show like Queen Bey.

Beyoncé shut down the VMAs with an epic 16-minute medley of a dozen of her songs.

It was sexy, sensual, raw, and emotional.

It was flawless.

The singer's performance came in lieu of accepting the the Video Vanguard Award, MTV's equivalent to a lifetime achievement award.

Here's how it went down.

Beyoncé came out on stage surrounded by a group of dancers while singing "Mine."beyonce vmas

And just like that, the performance cranked the dial up a few notches with two of Beyoncé's raunchier singles "Blow" and "Cherry."

Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels took the stage at the MTV Video Music Awards to promote their new film, "Dumb and Dumber To," a sequel to their 1994 hit.

The two came out singing Sia's Chandelier before Carrey began joking about catching ebola at Coachella as he ran around on stage wrapped in a scarf.jim carrey scarf vmas

That wasn't such a good idea as the 52-year-old actor backed up a little two far and fell backward off stage.

Carrey was soon back on his feet though and the duo played it off.

If you watched the MTV Video Music Awards live on television, you weren't watching them the right way.

MTV ran a handful of live action feeds online during the show that were more entertaining than the broadcast on television.

Audience camera two was a gold mine showing off Taylor Swift and Katy Perry's dance moves, Kim Kardashian's reaction to Jay Pharoah's impression of her husband Kanye West, and other musician's reactions to the performers of the night.

However the best reaction may have to go to Jennifer Lopez who clearly was not feeling Usher's performance at the VMAs.

The singer threw him shade not once, but twice during his performance.

The first time, it's not really clear what catches her attention from the stage.jennifer lopez shade vmas usher

Throughout his entire performance she either looked bored flipping her hair around or very critical as she bit down on her forefinger.

J Lo. was much more receptive of the other talent. Later on, she rocked out to Iggy Azalea and Rita Ora as they performed "Black Widow."
